JSHAO Housing Briefs- Northolt, RAF Wyton & RAF Waddington

Responding to Children Affected by the Media Coverage of the Manchester Incident

Parents, teachers and others caring for children who are affected by the media coverage of incidents like that in Manchester are asking Winston's Wish how to respond to children's questions.

The Winston's Wish Charity has compiled some questions and answers by drawing on experiences of supporting children, young people and families bereaved through all causes, including through murder or manslaughter.

Please see the list of contact details for organisations at the end if you would like to ask other questions on how best to support children affected by these events or by other bereavements.

MOD Housing Referral Scheme

The MOD Referral Scheme is coordinated by JSHAO to assist some service leavers to get accommodation via housing associations.
Some housing associations ask JSHAO to nominate personnel as tenants for vacant properties. Being on the MOD Referral Scheme provides an additional route to secure housing.
The MOD have recognised that some service leavers have difficulty in accessing social and affordable housing. Through this scheme the donating housing associations are able to help people who otherwise may have problems being prioritised high enough to have a realistic chance of being housed by local authorities.

Applicants must be:
  • armed forces personnel within 6 months of their discharge date
  • currently occupying service accommodation, the Services Cotswold Centre or a hostel
Applications for the scheme can be accepted from service leavers, married or single, and from separated spouses living in SFA.

Using Social Media - A Guide for Military Personnel

The use of social media is accepted by Defence and, when
used appropriately, should be encouraged.

The issue we face is not why or how we use social media, but how
well we use it.
The government has produced a useful guide that tells you what is
and isn’t acceptable social media behavior for military personnel.

Toby Carvery Marches into Charity Partnership with The Royal British Legion

Toby Carvery is delighted to announce its charity partnership with The Royal British Legion, which it will be supporting with fundraising initiatives over the next two years.

Toby Carvery’s across the UK will be taking part in the fundraising initiative, adding a special charity pudding to their menus with 25p from each pudding sale being donated to The Legion. The jam and coconut sponge was voted for by Toby Carvery’s fans on Facebook to be the official charity pudding and received over 500 entries.

Toby Carvery aims to raise £100,000 for The Royal British Legion by the end of 2018, and is encouraging everyone to tuck into a pudding and get involved in local fundraising activities to help support this great cause.

Martin Gosling, Brand Operations Director for Toby Carvery comments: “We couldn’t be happier to support The Royal British Legion and have this great cause as our brand charity partnership throughout the year. The Legion’s cause is close to both employees and guests of Toby Carvery up and down the country, and we can’t wait to start fundraising to support both past and current members of the Armed Forces as well as their families.”

Injured Veterans Military Compensation

Following English, Welsh and Scottish Government announcements this year, injured veterans in England, Scotland and Wales will no longer have to surrender most of their military compensation to pay for their social care from 2017.
By contacting their MPs about this issue, our supporters were instrumental in persuading their Government to protect injured veterans’ compensation payments. Thank you to everyone who gave their support; the new changes really will make a huge difference to thousands of injured veterans.
